ECNL vs MLS NextWhat Every Soccer Parent Needs to Know.
Two leagues. Two pathways. One decision that shapes your player’s development for years. Here is the honest, complete guide — no club politics, no bias, just the facts you need to make the right call for your family.
Two Leagues. Two Different Visions.
ECNL and MLS Next are the two highest levels of youth club soccer in the United States. Both serve players U13 through U19. Both attract college scouts and national team staff. But they were built with different philosophies — and understanding those differences is the most important thing a soccer parent can do.
ECNL
Elite Clubs National League — the nation’s leading club-based youth soccer development platform, operated as a nonprofit by its member clubs.
MLS Next
Major League Soccer’s elite youth development platform — launched in 2020 to replace the US Soccer Development Academy and build a direct pipeline to professional soccer.

The Full Youth Soccer Pyramid.
ECNL and MLS Next sit at the top. Below them is a structured pyramid — and understanding where each level leads is essential for navigating your player’s development intelligently.
Recreational / AYSO
Entry point. Community leagues, AYSO, local rec programs. Ages 4–12. Fun, fundamentals, first touches.
Travel / Club
First competitive step. Local travel clubs, NPL, regional leagues. Ages 8–14. Where most players spend their development years.
Pre-ECNL / ECNL RL
ECNL Regional League — second tier below full ECNL. Strong competition, scouts present. Clear promotion pathway upward.
ECNL / MLS Next
Top tier. Elite competition, maximum scout exposure, national events. College coaches and pro scouts watch these games.
College / Pro
D1 college soccer, MLS Next Pro, Homegrown contracts, international trials. The destination — reached by a small % of players who make it this far.
The honest reality: Of all players who enter MLS Next at U13, roughly 10–15% eventually sign professional contracts, and only 3–5% become professional starters. The goal for the vast majority is a college scholarship — and both ECNL and MLS Next are excellent pathways to that outcome. Success at either level depends far more on the individual player’s development, work ethic, and coaching quality than on which league badge is on their jersey.
The Questions Every Parent Asks.
The answers that club directors often won’t give you directly — because they have a club to sell.
Is ECNL or MLS Next better for my player?
For girls: ECNL is generally considered the gold standard — more established, more college scouts, deeper history. For boys aiming at a professional career: MLS Next’s direct pipeline to MLS academies gives it an edge. For most players whose goal is a college scholarship, both leagues provide excellent exposure. The quality of the individual club and coach matters more than the league badge.
Can my player play in both ECNL and MLS Next?
No. These are competing platforms and clubs must choose one. Some clubs have teams in both leagues at different age groups, but individual players register with one platform per season. This is one of the key decisions families face when choosing a club.
Can my player still play high school soccer?
Yes — in both leagues, for most players. This is a major change from the old Development Academy, which banned high school soccer. ECNL allows it for all players. MLS Next allows it in the Academy Division; Homegrown Division players may face restrictions depending on their specific club agreement.
How much does it cost to play at this level?
Significantly more than recreational or standard travel soccer. Annual club fees at ECNL and MLS Next level typically range from $3,000 to $8,000+ per year, before travel, tournaments, and equipment. In 2026, MLS Next introduced new scholarship requirements for some Academy Division programs to improve access.
What’s the ECNL Regional League?
The ECNL RL is the second tier below full ECNL — a strong, well-organized league with real scout attendance. It has a clear promotion pathway into the full ECNL. For many families, the ECNL RL is the right level — competitive without the full cost and travel demands of the top tier. In 2026-27, ECNL RL postseasons integrate with MLS Next’s Academy Division playoffs.
What is a Homegrown Player?
An MLS club can place up to 45 registered academy players on its Homegrown Player list — which means those players cannot be recruited by other MLS clubs. If a Homegrown player develops into a professional, MLS provides a Development Grant to the youth club that developed them. It’s the most direct pathway from youth soccer to a professional MLS contract.
What are ECNL National Events?
ECNL runs nearly 40 national events per season across both boys and girls leagues. These are the showcases where college coaches and pro scouts concentrate — averaging hundreds of scouts per event. For players serious about college recruiting, attending and performing at ECNL National Events is one of the highest-value activities in youth soccer.
My player is 10 — should I worry about this yet?
Not really. The ECNL and MLS Next decision becomes relevant at U13 and above. Before that, the most important thing is finding a club with excellent coaching, a positive culture, and an appropriate challenge level. The technical and personal development that happens between ages 7 and 12 is what determines whether a player is competitive at the elite level later — not which elite league they eventually join.
